My sister and I took the time out of a busy afternoon to drive to my Grandmother's grave to visit her...talk to her...and just reflect on the special memories we hold.
Christmas was her favorite time of year. She loved being with her family, loved the food, and especially loved the smell of Christmas. My mom always talks about how Grandma would call her right after Thanksgiving and say: "I just got my first smell of Christmas!"
When we got to her grave we were surprised to see that she had a beautiful arrangement and Christmas tree near her headstone. My sweet mom had taken the time to go out there on her own and make it for her. Thinking of this brings tears to my eyes...they had such a wonderful mother/daughter-in-law relationship.
When my sister and I arrived home, my Grandfather was dressed in his suit sitting on the couch ready to go to Christmas Eve service at his church...ALONE! We had all assumed that he would be going with us to my parents church, but, of course he wanted to go to his home church. Mandy and I just looked at eachother, ran upstairs and quickly threw on some clean clothes, brushed our hair, and slabbed on some lipstick to go with him....there was no way he was going to spend Christmas Eve alone in the pews at church. (By the way, there is no way any of my family members would have allowed him to go by himself). Grandpa drove...really fast...to make it to church on time. He was so proud to have his two "favorite" granddaughters accompany him to his church...and of course, we were proud to be there with him!
